March 31st, 2023
'A Transformation of Spirits The story of the Welcome Totem Pole raised at the Foundry Sea to Sky in Squamish.’
A visual narrative that follows the 18 month long journey of a red cedar log, transformed into a welcome totem pole.
Commisioned by the Sea to Sky Community Services, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) artist See-Appl-tun (Art Harry) invited youth of Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in Squamish to help carve the pole. Over a period of 10 weeks See-Appl-tun shared his skills and stories.
Since March 31st 2023 the totem pole shines at the entrance of the newly built Foundry Sea to Sky. Its wings spread wide to welcome young people between 12 and 24 and their families for free, confidential, age-friendly and supportive mental-health and substance-use services, as well as social and recreational programs to fit their unique needs.
The photo book portraits the story of a community pulling together to create a sense of belonging for its youth.
